You have decide what you want to use the camera for. Will you be wanting prints and large blow ups or just the web? Do you want to be able to take it anywhere in a pocket? Do you need manual speed and aparture or is point and click ok? Do you need high optical zoom?

In my experience my 2.1Mpx digital ixus (2 years old now) is perfect for taking photos that are primarily online. I have occasionally got prints and at 6"x4" it is virtually analogue quality.
The ixus is also tiny and very sturdy so I never feel scared about taking it out with me on the town or doing sports (e.g. snowboarding). If I want high-quality and high-flexibility then I'll take my SLR and scan the negatives.

My Dad has 6mpx camera but it is not very portable. The image quality is perseptibly better than mine and it has lots more features, but it is to big to have in a pocket and is more delicate.

If I were to buy a new digital camera I'd probably go for the latest incarnation of the ixus - it's just really sweet!! But it depends on what you want it for.

If you want to see image quality, most of these photos were taken with the Ixus and are 1600x1200 raw.

madis, have you decide which cam you going to get? I already did.

I'm planning to buy the Canon EOS 10D

but kind of expensive. about 15395 SEK (Sweden Kronor) + 25% tax.

btw, Heard that Canon PowerShot G3 is one of the hot digicams too.

or maybe you can try nikon coolpix.

i'm gonna wait for the new panasonic (slimest camera 3mpx and leica lenses, out this year) or go for the slim minolta of 3.2mpx. I want smth really thin (to have it always with me) and at the same time around 3mpx (that will be enough even for enlarged prints).

The panasonic would be nicer cause lenses do their part too. The better the lenses the better the result, of course. At the same mpx, take the best lenses, for granted.

Good and small digi-cameras with 3+ mpx. :

Canon v3, Pentax Optio S, Casio EXS3, Fuji A303, Minolta Dimage XI (my choosen before seeing the Panasonic in a catalogue), Konica KD400Z 4.0m 3x sd-ms.

I havent seen the one I was saying of Panasonic , but it could be Panasonic DMC-LC33. This model has Leica lenses. Well, looks like Panasonic and Leica have some agreement lately.

the dmc-fz1 seems to be nice too...
alhtough it only has 2.0 megapixels, but it's the only panasonic digi cam that has 12x optical zoom and 3x digital zoom in it...

my question is, is there really a big difference between 2.0, 3.0, 4.0 megapixels for prints up to 8x10"?
even for prints bigger than that...like giant poster size...will 2.0 megapixel have poor quality?

any advice or suggestion is appreciated...thanks

well, i bet you can print at that size just fine. There should be mpixels/print sizes equivalences out there in the net. I can check out the user's manual when i get at office.

BUT. Again. When you are comparing to cameras with the same resolution, normally you compare just what the sensor is able to retrieve. This is important but if you put a plastic in front of thelens no matter if the camera will take 11mpx, the image will be crap. Thus, at same mpx, take the best lenses.

Btw, I'm back, just wanted to start posting again and this topic is a good one. I'm gonna definitely buy a digicam soon, so i'll be posting my findings here too

anyone heard of the sony cyber-shot v1? I've seen it in a leaflet but havent in stores. Looks like what i'm looking for. Slim (dunno the size but looks so) yet powerful and with excellent lenses (Carl Zeiss 4x).

edit: ahhh, not bad, Dimensions 99 x 65 x 57 mm ... http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/Sony/sony_dscv1.asp
maybe not too slim though...
